Full description
Yogyakarta is more than a royal palace. It is a living city where centuries-old traditions, royal heritage, local communities, and contemporary life continue to exist side by side.
On this immersive city tour, we’ll trace the story of Yogyakarta through its royal heritage, forgotten corners, local food, and everyday streets—from the former royal grounds of Tamansari to the heart of the Keraton and the bustling streets of Malioboro.
From the Sultanate to Everyday Jogja
Our journey begins around Ndalem Mangkubumen, where we’ll uncover stories of power, royal family dynamics, and the development of the Yogyakarta Sultanate. From there, we’ll walk toward Pasar Ngasem, once connected to the former lake surrounding Tamansari. Today, it is a lively local market where you can experience a different side of Jogja—and perhaps try some freshly made apem, bakpia, and other local treats. We’ll then explore Tamansari Water Castle and go beyond the parts most visitors usually see. Tamansari was once much larger than the surviving complex you can visit today, serving not only as a royal leisure space but also as part of the Sultanate’s water and defensive system.
Inside the Living Palace
From Tamansari, we continue to the Yogyakarta Palace (Keraton Yogyakarta), the heart of the Sultanate and an important part of the city’s cultural landscape. Here, we’ll look beyond the royal buildings to understand how Javanese traditions, Islamic influences, royal authority, and contemporary Indonesian life have developed alongside one another. Rather than simply seeing the palace, we’ll explore what makes Yogyakarta different: the Sultanate is not only history—it is still part of the city’s everyday life.
From the Palace to Malioboro (By Becak)
Our journey continues toward Malioboro, Yogyakarta’s most famous street. We’ll take a traditional becak (pedicab) and explore how this iconic street developed through encounters between the Yogyakarta Sultanate and Dutch colonial power. The final stop is Fort Vredeburg, where we’ll uncover another layer of the city’s colonial history and understand how political power, trade, and urban development shaped the Yogyakarta we see today.
Why join us?
You can certainly visit Tamansari, Keraton Yogyakarta, and Malioboro on your own. But this tour is about noticing what you might otherwise miss. We’ll connect the places, stories, and people together so that by the end of the journey, you don’t just know where you went—you understand more about how Yogyakarta works. Come walk beyond the landmarks and discover Yogyakarta as a living royal city.
